Blue-banded Kingfisher

Distribution:
Blue-banded Kingfisher range throughout peninsular Thailand and Malaysia, Brunei, Myanmar and Indonesia.
Habitat:
This species is generally found near slow-flowing streams and larger rivers running through humid evergreen or mangrove forest. It is commonly found in lowland forests.
Characteristics:
It measures approximately 20cm in length and males have dark blackish upperparts with a silvery- azure streak from mantle to rump. It has a white throat and the rest of the body is a rufous colour, with a bold blue band across the chest. The female is also rufous but lacks the breast-band.
Ecology:
The Blue-banded Kingfisher is mainly piscivorous but also consumes crustacenas, insects and small reptiles. Breeding has been recorded from February - June.
Threats:
This species is thought to have undergone a rapid and continuing population decline due to the loss of lowland forest habitat in much of its range.
