Forest restoration on this scale has never been done before. It poses many research questions across a range of disciplines and provides a number of research opportunities.

Our current areas of interest include:

  • forest replanting and restoration approaches, developing experimental forest management practices, including nursery techniques;
  • seed germination and seedling recruitment to help understand natural regeneration processes, monitor forest condition and inform restoration approaches;
  • phenological studies of key tree species to assist seed collection and improve understanding of food availability;
  • baseline surveys of small mammals, invertebrates and fish, and relating their abundances to different forest regeneration stages or restoration approaches;
  • population and habitat selection/association studies of any globally threatened species that may inform/influence management decisions;
  • ecological studies of important seed dispersers;
  • improving habitat connectivity within Harapan Rainforest and the surrounding landscape;
  • monitoring water quality through the use of biological indicators; and
  • quantifying and valuing ecosystem services delivered by Harapan Rainforest.

We welcome mutually beneficial proposals from individuals, either local students or international postgraduates, or institutions and also collaboration with wider ranging programmes. We prioritise our resources for external proposals that focus on our core research activities but are happy to receive proposals on other subject areas, providing they are accompanied by appropriate resources.

If you feel that your research interests can contribute to the work we are doing here then please contact us with a one page outline of your initial proposal.
