Job title: BIODIVERSITY OFFICER (BO)
Location: HARAPAN RAINFOREST (HRF), JAMBI, SUMATRA
Department: RESEARCH AND CONSERVATION (R&C)
Post holder reports to: HEAD OF RESEARCH AND CONSERVATION
Reporting to post holder: FIELD ASSISTANTS and associated project field staff
 
Start date - 31st October 2010 or soon after
Contract - One year from start date, with an initial three-month evaluation period
Salary - Competitive; based on qualifications and experience
 
 Overall Role
To work closely with the Head of R&C and other research staff, including the existing Biodiversity Officers, to support all aspects of the biodiversity survey, monitoring and training programmes, contributing to the development of a biodiversity research strategy that supports forest restoration, including building key research collaborations for HRF. The BO will have the opportunity to lead on certain priority projects but will also support projects led by other BOs. They will be expected to organise training activities, seminars and workshops for the project staff and external participants and supervise visiting volunteers and students.
 
 Person Specification
 
 Qualifications:
 An MSc or equivalent in a relevant subject (e.g. Conservation Biology, Tropical Forest Ecology)
 
 Experience:
  • High level of general ecological and natural history knowledge in tropical forests gained from personal experience
  • Specific experience of Indonesian forests
  • Good practical and theoretical knowledge of a range of fieldwork techniques applicable to tropical forest research
  • Species inventories and surveys in tropical forest
  • Providing training in conservation activities to a range of counterparts
  • Building collaborations with Universities
  • Supervising volunteers and biology students
  • Writing research funding proposals
 
Skills/abilities:
  • Identification skills in at least one key taxonomic group, e.g. birds, mammals, plants, herptiles
  • Systematic survey design
  • Supervisory and training (e.g. of field staff, government workers, volunteers and/or University students)
  • Computing ability to include word-processing, spreadsheet and statistic packages
  • GIS ability desirable but not essential
  • Good writing and communication skills
  • Good written and spoken English
  • Work in remote areas
 
Knowledge:
  • Tropical forest ecology and survey and monitoring techniques
  • Forest restoration
 
Disposition:
  • Work under own initiative
  • Operate effectively in basic living conditions
