Ironwood
Local name:
Bulian
Scientific name:
Eusideroxylon Zwageri
Status:
Vulnerable
Family: Lauraceae
Distribution: This species is found in Indonesia, Brunei, Sabah, Sarawak and Philippines.
Habitat: It grows in lowland secondary and primary forest, up to an altitude of approximately 500m.
Ecology: This is a canopy species. It can be scattered or gregarious in its distribution. It grows best in well-drained sandy and clay soils. Once this tree is logged it has a very slow regeneration process.
Threats: Ironwood is one of the heaviest and most durable timbers in the world, which has lead to its over-exploitation. This species is also threatened because of the difficulty in its cultivation and poor regeneration.
At Harapan Rainforest: Ironwood is being grown successfully in the Harapan Rainforest nursery and saplings of this species are already being planted in plots as part of the forest restoration process.
