Mitred Langur/Sumatran Surili
Local name:
Simpai
Scientific name:
Presbytis melalophos ssp.
Status:
Endangered
Distribution: Mitred langur are endemic to Sumatra, where they have a limited distribution in the south and west of the island.
Population size: The population size is not known. However, Mitred langur are locally common in parts of their range.
Habitat: Tropical dry forests and tropical rainforests, both primary and secondary and occasionally plantations.
Ecology: Mitred langur are diurnal and generally arboreal. Females give birth to a single offspring. Mitred langurs occur in small groups of around 5-8 individuals.
Threats: The principal threat to this species is habitat loss. Mitred langurs are tolerant of habitat disturbance and degradation, but habitat loss has been extreme throughout much of their range. Mitred langurs are also often captured for the pet trade. Occasionally, individuals are shot for food or because they are considered a pest of plantations and farms.
At Harapan Rainforest: Mitred langurs have been photographed on our camera traps and are frequently seen during mammal surveys in the forest. Adult males let out a loud alarm call whenever we are near to a group so they are often heard before they are seen.
