Our Work

Our work at Harapan Rainforest is made up of four main activities:

FOREST PROTECTION - We have over 130 forest patrol staff who continually monitor Harapan Rainforest to protect it from further degradation. Forest patrols are also trained to respond to any fire outbreaks within the forest area.

FOREST RESTORATION - The forest restoration team is responsible for seed collection, management of the nurseries, growing and monitoring trees, planting saplings in selected forest plots and undertaking inventories.
RESEARCH AND CONSERVATION - The conservation and research team is responsible for surveying and monitoring the biodiversity of Harapan Rainforest and helping to inform and support the forest restoration activities.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT - This team works with the communities who live within and around Harapan Rainforest. It supports their sustainable use of the forest area and works with them to identify and create new sustainable livelihood opportunities for them.

Harapan Rainforest key achievements to date :

  • Providing immediate direct employment opportunities for more than 130 people from local communities as area patrols and other supporting activities.
  • The capacity of the forest patrol staff has been built through training in species identification, mammal surveys and camera trapping, tree climbing (for Hornbill nestboxes and fire platforms), map reading and using global positioning systems.
  • Establishing a successful fire management scheme following fire fighting training for the forest patrol staff.
  • Significantly reduced the incidence of illegal logging and trapping and hunting in Harapan Rainforest.
  • Completing rapid surveys confirming the global importance of Harapan Rainforest for biodiversity conservation.
  • Establishing a core research team
  • Installing 30 Hornbill nestboxes (the first project of its kind in Indonesia).
  • Establishing a tree nursery.
  • Completing botanical collection training for 20 members of staff, by the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew and Bogor Herbarium.
