Partners

The management rights to Harapan Rainforest have been secured for a period of 100 years by a consortium of Burung Indonesia, The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and Birdlife International.

Burung Indonesia

Burung Indonesia is the BirdLife partner in Indonesia. It led the advocacy with the Indonesian government, that resulted in a policy change allowing logged forest to be managed for ecosystem restoration rather than being cleared for pulp or oil palm plantations. Burung Indonesia implements a large portfolio of research and field projects, and has developed successful public outreach programmes. Burung Indonesia works with local non-governmental organisations (NGOs) throughout Indonesia.

RSPB

The RSPB is a UK charity working to secure a healthy environment for birds and all wildlife, helping to create a better world for everyone. It is the BirdLife partner organisation in the UK . The RSPB has more than one million members, it manages nearly 200 nature reserves and has more than 20 years experience of working with partners in developing countries. The RSPB will contribute to forest management, planning, research and advocacy work, biodiversity surveying and monitoring, communications and fundraising for Harapan Rainforest.

  Birdlife International

BirdLife International is the global network of more than 100 independent, grassroots, national conservation organisations, supported by more than 10 million people worldwide. Birdlife partners work together on shared priorities, programmes and policies. These organisations share the same mission of protecting birds, biodiversity and their natural habitats by promoting priority- setting, action, awareness, education and sustainable use of natural resources.

Implementing organisations

In order to provide effective implementation of the Harapan Rainforest initiative, the consortium has created two Indonesian-registered organisations:

PT REKI is a formally-registered company that exists solely to hold the concession licences, as required by Indonesia law.

Yayasan KEHI is a registered not-for-profit foundation under Indonesian law. It is charged by the consortium with the day-to-day management of the concessions. It is the majority shareholder of PT REKI.

Project affiliates
There are a number of project partners in the Harapan Rainforest initiative who play a part in specific donor-funded activities including:

Overseas Development Institute (UK);
KKI-WARSI (Indonesia);
Forest Restoration Research Unit - Chiang Mai University (Thailand);
Royal Botanic Garden Kew (UK).
