Vision and Mission:
Harapan Rainforest is internationally recognised as a centre of excellence for the cost-effective restoration and sustainable management of tropical dry lowland rainforest. Protection and management of the area is shared by local communities, government and NGOs working together to ensure that the forest continues to support a wide range of unique plants and animals, provides a range of essential environmental services and enhanced livelihoods for present and future generations. The forest also provides facilities for nature-based tourism and high quality training and research.
Our Challenges and Approach:
- Work with local people and government to safeguard the remaining forest within the location;
- Halt the loss of this threatened forest habitat and the biodiversity within it;
- Stop illegal logging, encroachment, poaching and forest fires;
- Develop and demonstrate forest restoration techniques and sustainable eco-system management;
- Develop biodiversity survey and monitoring strategies to assess forest management approaches;
- Implement forest restoration activities which conserve and enhance biodiversity;
- Offer direct employment opportunities to local people;
- Preserve and support sustainable forest-dependent livelihoods;
- Work with indigenous people to create new sustainable livelihood opportunities;
- Explore and develop ecotourism opportunities at Harapan Rainforest;
- Demonstrate a sustainable management system for natural production forest;
- Provide and innovative and widely applicable model for forest restoration and carbon sequestration;
- Provide new information on tropical moist forest ecology and ecosystem restoration.
